The good season this year wasn't very good, but we are looking forward to a sunny and hot summer (but not too much). And, with good weather, where can you imagine yourself except in gorgeous cabrio cars with the wind in your hair speeding through Tuscan cypress trees and our beautiful Italian coasts?Below a round-up of what we think are the 10 most iconic cabrio and spider cars.Alfa Romeo Spider DuettoIt is one of the most famous two-seater spiders, it may be because of the movie "Il Laureato" that was a huge success or because of the nickname Osso di Seppia (cuttlefish bone)that was given to the first series, anyway we love it. Small, harmonious and elegant, this is the perfect spider.
Ferrari 250 GT CaliforniaCreated for the U.S. market from an idea of Luigi Chinetti, the Ferrari importer and friend of Enzo that understood that Americans were craving an open 250 GT.Over the years it was loved by everyone, including Hollywood actors (pictured are Alain Delon and Jane Fonda). It was produced in two series, long-wheelbase and short-wheelbase, from 1957 to 1963 and is certainly among the most iconic cabrio cars ever.
Jaguar XK 120Absolutely a must on the list, the XK 120 was the first sporty Jaguar of the postwar period and had a number of technical innovations including the new 6-cylinder engine. The numerical component of its name referred to the speed it could reach in miles per hour, close to 200 km/h, which for the time was almost science fiction. With its classic English elegance it made us dream of fluttering scarves and picnic baskets in the trunk.
Mazda MX-5Now in its fourth generation, the Japanese two-seater with a canvas roof has reached 1.25 million units produced without ever changing the original 1989 recipe based on lightness, attention to detail and industrial craftsmanship in favor of top of the notch dynamic. The world's best-selling spider turns 35 this year, and we are more than happy to celebrate with it by including it among the most iconic roadster cars ever.
Porsche 911 cabrioletSwear to me that you don't turn around when a 911 goes by. I can't, and if it's without a sunroof my eyes get heart-shaped. Born in 1964, it took several years to make it a convertible as well. As Ferry Porsche said, "The 911 is the only car with which you can go on safari in Africa or race at Le Mans, go to the theater or drive the streets of New York," and if it's cabrio, it's also perfect for a trip between the Italian coasts.
Audi TT MK1 RoadsterThis is a highly successful convertible car, available with the classic electrically operated canvas top. A car with a sporty character, it was born in 1998 and greatly changed Audi's image, making it what it is today. For its eye-catching design it was even exhibited at the MoMa in New York, owning it today means having a small piece of automotive design history in your garage.
Mini CabrioI want to be obvious, but how can you not include a Mini as one of the most iconic cabrios? When I got my driver's license, way back in 2011, it was my dream car, small, compact and of course convertible. From the wonderfully Mini design, produced since 2004, it is also to be included in this list for the speed of opening the hood, 18 seconds.Young and iconic, it may still be my dream car.
Maserati MC20 Cielo and Opera d’ArteA cabrio with a hardtop roof and butterfly door opening, a top speed of more than 200 mph (320 km/h) and 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in less than 3 seconds, Maserati has outdone itself. This is 100% made in Italy, with elegant design and at the same time extraordinary performance. And shall we applaud for the color? This year the Opera d'Arte version came out with bodywork enriched with abstract graphics that recall the works of Mondrian. We love them!
Fiat 500 CabrioLet's stay in Stellantis and mention this little one from the house of Fiat, it exists electric or in the more traditional gasoline version but also Mild Hybrid that, with the cost of about 20,000€, in 2022, won the first place in the cheapest convertible cars.A car for easy parking in the city and feeling the wind in your hair in the countryside.
500 SpiagginaMade on the basis of the historic Fiat 500, our Spiaggina closes this roundup of iconic cars. The all-electric 500 Spiaggina MY 2024 has just been released, with seats woven by Bonacina craftsmen, a graphic interface that maintains the balance between vintage and contemporary display screens, and a wide variety of colors and options make it totally customizable. A little gem that we are proud of.
